How to Apply for Section 8 — Waiting Lists & PHA Steps
Published May 15, 2026
Run your numbers: Use the Section 8 calculator with your ZIP to see eligibility and estimated voucher help.
There is no single national Section 8 application. You apply through the Public Housing Authority (PHA) that serves your county or metro area. Many PHAs only open waiting lists for a few days every few years.
Typical steps
- Check income against HUD limits for your household size — use our calculator with your ZIP.
- Find your PHA on HUD’s PHA contact list.
- Apply when the waiting list opens — online, mail, or in person per PHA instructions.
- Wait for selection — can be months to many years depending on area.
- Receive a voucher and search for a qualifying rental before the voucher term expires.
While you wait
- Keep contact info updated with the PHA.
- Ask about local preferences (elderly, disabled, veteran, working family).
- Learn your area’s payment standard so you know what rent range to expect.
Estimate your tenant share and max voucher help before you start calling landlords.
